Genghis Khan was born in the north east of Mongolia close to the border with Siberia in Russia. A beautiful area of forests, lakes and wide rivers, it is of great historical importance, and you will ride in the mountains and valleys where Genghis Khan lived as a child before becoming leader of the Mongol Empire. This tour is 8-days in total, with 6-days riding covering 1300 km; it is an experience of wilderness and culture that would be hard to beat elsewhere.
The route is 75% off-road, following rough jeep tracks most of the way. You'll be riding on loose gravel, hard pack, mud and rock, and there are some river crossings. All nights on tour are spent in the wild outdoor CAMPING in TENTS with no luxurious facilities.
The places you will see along the way:
This amazing silver statue of Genghis Khan on a horse is the biggest horse statue in the world. It is 40 meters tall and can be seen from more than 30km away, glinting in the sunshine. Visitors can get to the top for a marvelous view of the Tuul river valley.
This small lake hidden in the mountains just north of Tsenkhermandal village, is the place where the young Temujin was crowned "Genghis Khan" in 1206. The lake is difficult to find and surrounded by muddy water-logged valleys on all sides.
Genghis Khan was born in 1162 on a hill called "Deluun Boldog" not far from the Russian border. In nearby Dadal village there is now a small lake, "Spleen Lake", where his family ger was pitched, and a tall monument celebrating 800 years since his birth.

Arrive in 'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel. Afternoon or evening meet the tour leader and rest of group. Start pre-tour meeting. The meeting talks about day by day itinerary and safety issues. Overnight in hotel.
Set off eastwards towards "Khentii" Province, stopping for lunch at the huge silver statue of 'Genghis Khan' on his horse. Leave the main black-topped road before the village of "Tsenkher Mandal" and ride over the mountains to arrive at the small 'Khukh Nuur' (“Blue Lake”). Overnight camping.
Ride on rough jeep tracks through silver birch forest and open rocky hilltops through 'Binder' district to an ancient King’s graveyard in the mountains. There is little left to see of the cemetery, but interesting to note the historical importance of this area. Overnight camping.
Not far from our campsite are some bronze-age rock paintings which we stop to see before riding on to "Bayan Adraga" village beside the wide 'Onon' river. Ride through a beautiful forested area and camp before the bridge. Overnight camping.
Cross the "Onon" river near the entrance to "Onon-Balj" National Park, then ride north a short distance to "Dadal" village where Genghis Khan was born in 1162. Where his mother’s 'Ger' once stood there is now a small lake and not far away there is an excellent viewpoint called 'Deluun Boldog'. Drive to "Norovlin" District and overnight wild camping.
Drive across the fertile open hills of "Batnorov" district and through the village to reach "Chinggis", the capital of Khentii province located beside the 'Kherlen River'. Overnight camping on a mountainside beyond the town.
Return to Ulaanbaatar on the good new black paved 'Road', stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. Overnight in hotel.
