Ride motorcycles through the five central provinces of Mongolia, the region where Genghis Khan established the capital of the Mongol Empire in the thirteenth century. Enjoy mountain, desert, steppe and forest landscapes as you cover more than 1500 kilometers across this wild and remote country which is inhabited mainly by nomadic families still living a lifestyle that has not changed much since the days of Genghis Khan.
The route is 85% off-road following rough jeep tracks of packed mud, loose gravel, rock and sand. There will be some river crossings, the amount of water depending on the season and recent rainfall. Accommodation throughout the tour is at traditional 'GER' camps with a restaurant and bathroom facilities, located in the most spectacular places.
The places you will see along the way:
These unique rock formations set in the central steppe of Middle Gobi are home to many species of wild animals and birds. It is believed that Zanabazar, the first in a line of Mongolian re-incarnate Lamas, came here for prayer and meditation.
These sculptures, still to be found in their original locations, were erected by Bronze Age nomads up to 3000 years ago. They depict running deer in stylized form, and are thought to be grave markers or waypoint markers for the meeting of tribes.
The monastery was built in the 16th century at the site once occupied by Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire. By the end of the 19th century there were more than 60 temples here and over 1000 Buddhist monks, but much was destroyed during the 1930s.

(Revised itinerary February 2025)
Arrive in 'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel. Evening meet up with the rest of the group and your Tour Leader for the Technical Briefing. Overnight in hotel.
Allocate motorbikes and start riding. Soon after exiting the city, we leave the asphalt road and head off into the distance on rough jeep tracks across the rolling hills of Tuv province. Late afternoon reach our overnight 'Ger' Camp.
Set off riding through the dramatic granite rock formations that make 'Baga Gazariin Chuluu', then continue across increasingly remote hilly landscapes to reach central Mongolia's 80-kilometerlong sand belt at 'Elsen Tasarkhai' where tonight's 'Ger' camp is located amidst sand dunes and desert vegetation.
Ride an hour on asphalt to "Kharkhorin" where Genghis Khan set up the capital of the great Mongol Empire in the thirteenth century. Visit 'Erdene Zuu' Buddhist monastery, the original centre of Buddhism in Mongolia, then ride south west along the wide Orkhon river valley to the 'Grand Waterfall'. Overnight 'Ger' Camp.
The morning route starts on a rocky volcanic track beside the river before branching off into the Khangai mountains. Cross over several high passes, some forested, before reaching the town of 'Tsetserleg' the capital of Arkhangai province. After lunch and a look around the town, ride over the final pass to reach the ger camp beside the Tamir river next to the 'Taikhar Chuluu' rock. Overnight 'Ger' Camp.
Ride through the village of Ikh Tamir and continue parallel with the river, passing by some fine ancient 'Deer Stones', still standing where they have been for two thousand years. Continue across open steppe, with a section on asphalt, before riding on little-used tracks through a remote area on the edge of the sand belt to arrive at 'Khogno Khan' mountain, at the foot of which is our ger camp.
Morning depart from Khogno Khan and soon arrive on the main road which we ride on for a while before departing from the asphalt and heading eastwards where the only inhabitants are 'Mongolian Families' with their herds of horses, sheep and goats. Late afternoon reach 'Uvurburd Els' where there are camels as well as other domesticated animals amongst the sand dunes. Overnight 'Ger' camp.
Follow the old jeep tracks for some time before joining the 'Tarmac Road' leading back to the capital city Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to hotel and 'Overnight in hotel'.
Departure.
